Outpatient Treatment : Rehab Centre : Rehab Centres : Addiction
While inpatient drug rehab treatment has been show to be much more effective than outpatient treatment, there are a number of reasons why it may either not be feasible or it is an excellent follow-up to inpatient treatment. This makes outpatient treatment an important part of treatment for nearly every addict, whether they utilise a residential programme or not.
For those that are on a very tight budget and/or must pay the costs out of their own pocket, an outpatient treatment programme may be their only alternative. In cases such as these, an effective outpatient treatment centre programme can be as effective as the residential option, provided that the advice given is carefully followed.
An outpatient programme allows the individual to still get treatment, even if they cannot afford more expensive rehab centres. An outpatient treatment programme can also be an excellent alternative for someone who is in school or needs to work. Many workplaces do not understand and will not support the individual that has an addiction, or perhaps the addict cannot afford to be out of work for the time it would take for an inpatient programme.
The outpatient program can serve as an alternative that will allow the patient to continue on with their life while taking care of their addiction. Outpatient treatment is also highly recommended after an inpatient rehab program. While an inpatient program is intensive and covers a lot in a short amount of time, it is putting what the patient has learned into practice that can be the most difficult part. It is important that the inpatient programme is followed up by outpatient treatment, to help the subject work through challenges as they happen, and to continue to reinforce the skills they have learned.
Outpatient treatment also tends to be a bit broader, not only in treating the patient, but also in including family counselling. By including the family, everyone can learn better coping skills, end enabling patterns and encourage communication within the family unit. Family counselling will not only help the patient move past the familial patterns that contributed to his addiction, but will help the family move past the pain and into forgiveness. It will also help the addict in productive ways that will help him or her stay sober.
Outpatient treatment does require a higher level of commitment on the part of the patient. Because they are not in an isolated environment with 24/7 counselling, they will have to rely a bit more on their own desire to remain sober and to stick with the programme that the treatment centre has offered them. For some people outpatient treatment is a great alternative, for others they may simply need the structure and safety that a residential treatment programme provides.
